Founded back in 1993, the company's original objective was to market natural gas to Eastern European countries. Soon the company focused more and more on the markets in Romania and Bulgaria. Since then, WIEE has sold more then 52 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Romania and approx. 8 billion cubic meters to Bulgaria. These quantities represent a substantial proportion of the total natural gas imports of this region.
WIEE continuously examines ways of developing the gas infrastructure in its markets. One recent example of this is the activities of its joint venture, WIROM GAS S.A. (WIROM) which has acquired the gas distribution licences for the Romanian cities of Turnu Magurele, Alexandria, Oltenita and Giurgiu. WIEE is also examining international cross-border pipeline projects with the Romanian Transgaz S.A., Bulgargaz and Naftogaz of Ukraine.
